Her First Christmas (Lights)
First Christmases aren’t usually remembered. They’re looked back on in old family photos. You’re mom’s sweetest treasure. She looks so young in the photo, holding you by the tree, smiling ear to ear, bright as Christmas lights.
We just had the privilege of setting up the celebration of a first Christmas. Except, it wasn’t for a new baby. It was for a woman in her 40s. She had never celebrated Christmas, had never had Christmas lights. And we got to change that for her.
We wrapped the trees in her front yard like candy canes. We clipped warm white C9 bulbs all along her roof line, both stories. By the time the lights were all up, the sun had gone down. She walked outside, we turned them on, and it was all unfair. The lights stood no chance. They couldn’t match the brightness of her eyes as, like a child, she smiled. Her first Christmas.
